This is the first instalment in a series of possession focused skill blogs. An effective way to learn these skills is by watching demonstrations, therefore we will include video clips to enable you to understand the steps involved.

Johan Cruyff was born in 1947, he played for a number of teams throughout his career, most notably AFC Ajax and Barcelona FC. He won European Footballer of the Year a record three times and after retiring as a player went on to coach.

Cruyff is regarded as one of the people responsible for the Total Football Philosophy. Total Football training emphasises possession & influences the style of Barcelona FC till this day. Read more about Total Football here.

This Cruyff Turn is particularly useful in that it supports our training emphasis on ball control and possession football.

The Skill

Step 1
Player should be in a face-to-face position with their opponent. They then move as though they are going to pass or shoot the ball.

Step 2
Player should then use their shooting leg to drag the ball backwards.

Step 3
Whilst dragging the ball backwards, player should then turn and keep on the move.

Remember practice makes perfect!
