On Monday night, Lionel Messi won the Ballon d’Or for a record fifth time!
The 28-year-old Barcelona forward was voted the best player in the world ahead of Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo and club team mate Neymar at the FIFA ceremony held in Zurich, Switzerland.
Messi received the most votes from a panel made up of national team coaches and captains, as well as a selection of the world’s media.
Messi picked up his first ‘World Player of the Year’ award in 2009, and went on to repeat the achievement for the following three successive years (2010, 2011 and 2012). He was briefly outshone by the incredible achievements of Cristiano Ronaldo in 2013 and 2014, but the skilful Argentinian has now reclaimed what has slowly becoming his own!
